The Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C., scattering the people to various parts of the Assyrian kingdom. The Babylonians captured Judah, the southern kingdom, in 605 B.C., with Jerusalem falling in 586. Many Jews were deported to Babylon, with some of the poor left behind to care for the vineyards and fields. Persia defeated Babylon in 539 B.C., resulting in the return of some Jews back to the Promised Land.
